Safety

Safety is Our First Priority.

If you smell a gas leak:
  1. Immediately extinguish open flames. Refrain from using appliances, lights, telephones, cell phones, or any other potential ignition sources in the area.
  2. Leave the area immediately!
  3. Shut off the gas. If it is safe to do so, shut off the gas at the tank. Remember the adage, “righty, tighty; lefty, loosey.” Turn the nob right (clockwise).
  4. Once at a safe distance, report the leak. All Service Propane customers may call (615) 599-6490 any time. If you can’t reach your propane provider, call 911.
  5. Do not return to the area until instructed to do so by your propane provider or by local authorities.
  6. Get your system checked. Contact your propane provider or a qualified service technician before you attempt to use any propane appliance. All Service Propane customers may call (615) 599-6490 any time.
What does a gas leak smell like?
Did you know that propane is naturally virtually odorless? That’s right. The odor is added to all residential propane to enhance your safety. Some people think it smells like rotten eggs. Others think it smells like skunk. But if you smell that distinctive odor, it is important to follow emergency gas leak procedures. You may also want to check to see how much propane is in your tank if it is safe to do so.

If you have a medical condition that causes you to have difficulty smelling gas, do not take any chances. If you detect even the faintest hint of a gas, follow emergency gas leak procedures.
